Installing and Configuring the Database Server
SWBTracker supports both "shared file" access to its database, as well as the use of a database server. Installing and configuring the database server requires a few additional steps, which are outlined below. Installing the Server Prior to installing the server, you should have already installed SWBTracker on your workstations, and created a folder on your file server and copied the SWBTracker database files to that directory. This directory will be the location of the data that will be shared by all workstations running SWBTracker. You will need to start by downloading the SWBTracker Database Server archive file. You can download this file by clicking here. When the download completes, extract the files in the archive to an empty temporary folder on your hard drive. The server application can be installed using the SETUPSVR.EXE program which was extracted from the archive. This application must be run at the file server it will be running on. When the installation process is complete, the installer will automatically start the database server, which will appear as an icon in the system tray. It will then run the Database Server Configurator. The only value you need to set in this application is the path of the database on the server itself. Use the Browse button to select the folder on the file server where the SWBTracker database is located. Then click the Set Configuration button and the server installation and configuration process will be complete. Important Note: The file server AND workstations must have ports ports 12005 and 12006 OPEN in order for workstations and remote users to communicate with the database server. If you have any type of hardware or software firewall or anti-virus software that blocks these ports on the file server OR workstations, disable it or configure it to allow communication over ports 12005 and 12006. This is especially important when using the database server to allow remote users (via the internet) to communicate with the database server module. These ports must be open to the internet in order for remote workstations to attach to the database server and function properly. Configuring the Workstations When you are done installing and configuring the server, you will need to run the Workstation Setup (netsetup.exe) program at each workstation to tell each workstation where the database server is located. To do this, run Workstation Setup at each workstation and use the Browse button to select the path to the database directory on the file server. This directory must be shared so all workstations can access the location where the database files are stored because other global information (such as option settings and license information) are stored there and the client application must be able to locate them. Next, check the box labeled "Use the database server". This will enable the Settings button next to the checkbox. Click this button to show the Database Server Settings window. On this window, you will need to set either the Host Computer Name or the Host TCP/IP Address. Local users on the LAN will probably use the Host Computer Name, whereas remote users connecting over the internet will need to enter the public IP address of the file server computer where the database server application is running. You do not need to set both fields. You should also choose the connection type for this computer, which should be set to LAN for local workstations, or Internet for remote workstations that connect to the database server over the internet. The remaining fields at the bottom of the window will normally default to the proper values. You should not change them unless you are sure you understand their purpose or you are instructed to do so by Software with Brains, LLC Click Ok to save the entry(s) you have made and the window will close and return you to the main Workstation Setup screen. Here you should make sure you have entered a valid User ID name as well for this workstation. This value must match one of the User IDs entered in SWBTracker on the User Information screen. For more information about setting up User IDs in Workstation Setup and defining those users and their permissions in SWBTracker, please see the topic "Setting Up User Access" in the SWBTracker help file. |
