For technical support questions, please use our Online Support Knowledgebase. Is SWBTracker web-enabled? The current version of SWBTracker, in conjunction with the Database Server module, allows you to use the same SWBTracker Windows client application to connect to the database over your high-speed internet connection, however, it does not use a web browser for remote users. Instead, remote users will run the same SWBTracker Windows application used by the locally connected workstations. By purchasing our optional database server application and running it on a Windows-based file server that is connected to the internet, you will be able to run SWBTracker and share your defect database not only with your local LAN users at the office, but with any remote user around the world who has a high-speed internet connection. For more information regarding the use of SWBTracker over the internet, click here. Top of Page
Which platforms does SWBTracker run on?SWBTracker runs on Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP. Top of Page
Can SWBTracker be used by more than one department?Yes. Not only does SWBTracker store information about defects, it can track requests for enhancements, allow support technicians to view workarounds for common problems, and print management reports and graphs that provide the "big picture" status of a product and release. Programmers can track program modifications, while testers document the effects of those changes. SWBTracker supports full record-locking which allows many users to concurrently view and modify the information in the database, without sacrificing its integrity. Most importantly, you'll know at a glance the program name, date, time and size of every file that should ship on a given release. This really benefits the team building the distribution media! Top of Page
Can I customize the terms used to classify defects?Yes. In fact, SWBTracker allows you to change the list of terms associated with several fields. You can change the choices for an item's nature (defect, enhancement, research item, documentation errata), severity (minor, moderate, critical) and status (being researched, being implemented, closed), as well as the choices for program and overall release status. You can even customize the colors used to display different types of programs and defects on the browse screens! Top of Page
What types of reports does SWBTracker print?SWBTracker has several built-in reports, ready for instant printing. It also offers a report customizer, which allows you to "filter" just the types of programs and defects you want to see. You can filter programs and defects by status, and defects by status, severity and nature. The defect reports can be printed in detail or summary fashion. SWBTracker also has management reports, including a statistical report that tells you the percentage of defects at each severity within a release. If you can't find one of our built-in reports that suits your needs, you can always use the built-in report designer which gives you complete control over which data is selected and how it is formatted. Top of Page
How will SWBTracker benefit my technical support staff?SWBTracker allows your support team to enter defects or research items at the time they are called in by the customer. They can be immediately classified by assigning a severity level, so the development team will know which bugs need immediate attention. SWBTracker offers a search facility to enable support technicians to find existing bugs by searching just the current release, or across all releases. If the problem has already been reported, a workaround page tells how it can be avoided in the future. The database also tracks information about the environment in which the problem occurred, including hardware, operating system, and network descriptions. In addition, the origin, workaround and environment screens all allow for free-form notes. Top of Page
Does SWBTracker support automatic e-mail notifications?Yes. SWBTracker can use your existing MAPI-compliant e-mail system or SMTP mail server to automatically notify people when a new entry has been added to the system, when the status of an entry has changed, when the assignee changes, when the priority changes, or any time any defect is saved. Notification recipient lists are based on the Status of saved defect, and can differ for each Status. For example, you might want to notify the Quality Assurance department when a programmer marks a defect "Ready for Testing." You can even create a custom e-mail notification "template" that contains the fields from the defect information so the notification message will appear exactly the way you want. Different e-mail message templates can even be specified for each defect status. Top of Page
Can I control the the type of access granted to different users in our company?Yes. Every workstation that accesses SWBTracker must have a unique User ID. This User ID can then be associated with specific "access rights." You can control whether a user is allowed to modify information at the release level, the program level, and the defect level. You can also specify which products each user has access to, which fields each user can modify, and whether users can add or delete releases, programs, and defects. Top of Page
What kind of hardware will I need to run SWBTracker? The minimum recommended workstation configuration for SWBTracker is a Pentium-class processor running at 400MHz MHz with 64 MB of RAM, and 15 MB of free hard disk space. Also, we recommend that your stations run Windows in 800 x 600 resolution (Super VGA mode) or higher, however, SWBTracker has been designed to fit within a 640 x 480 resolution display. Top of Page
What database format does SWBTracker use?SWBTracker uses the DBISAM database engine which utilizes a proprietary file format. The DBISAM file format is in use by many commercial applications and provides a stable, efficient database platform that is easy to deploy. Addditionally, a database server is also available for enhanced stability, reliability, and speed in multiuser environments. Top of Page
Can SWBTracker import and export its database?Yes. New import and export wizards are now available that allows you to import and export selected fields for defect, program, and customer information in various output formats, including Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, CSV (ASCII), and HTML formats, among others. Top of Page
Can I add custom fields to the database?Yes. SWBTracker allows up to 5 custom text fields and 5 custom checkboxes. Custom text fields can be configured as text entry, combo or combo with editable entry, file selection, or prepopulated combos such as customer or resource selection. Top of Page
Can I modify the appearance of the windows in SWBTracker? Not really. The tab captions on the Defect Information screen can be changed, and the changes to these tabs are reflected on the stock Defect Detail Report which displays defect information organized by "tab". Window and dialog colors are based on the current Windows color scheme for system colors such as Window Text Color, Window Background Color, 3D Objects Color (buttons), etc. All interface items use standard Windows color settings drawn from the user's Windows color scheme. Top of Page
Can I attach files and documents to issues?Yes -- multiple files can be attached to an issue. Attachments can be made easily using drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer, and the attachments can be opened within SWBTracker using the associated program for the attachment type/extension (assuming the extension is registered with an associated program in Windows). An easy screen-capture mechanism is built in for capturing window images or error messages to JPG files and automatically attaching them to a defect. Copies of the attached files are stored in the SWBTracker database. Top of Page
Can I switch the database to use Oracle or SQL Server? No. SWBTracker uses only the provided database and no option is available to substitute a different database format. However, we do offer an optional database server that will allow you to run SWBTracker in a shared environment through a single database server application rather than direct sharing of the database files by multiple applications. The database server can add not only enhanced stability to a multiuser environment, but increased performance in most cases as well. Top of Page
Does SWBTracker integrate with other configuration management tools? While SWBTracker does not have any specific integration functionality, you can configure up to 5 custom menu items to launch external applications with command line arguments. These command line arguments can now contain "variables" that represent fields from the currently selected program or defect. If your third-party application accepts command line parameters, this feature will allow you to "integrate" SWBTracker with that program, and allow you to call those programs and pass information currently stored in SWBTracker. Top of Page
Is there a "search" function in SWBTracker?Yes. Users may search for text in one of several fields including defect summary, or by defect number (among others). Find Next continues the search, highlighting the next matching defect. You can search within a single release, or across all releases within a given product, or across all products and releases. Top of Page
Can I customize the workflow of issues?Yes. SWBTracker features several powerful configuration options that allow you to control workflow. You can define which fields on the defect information screen are "required" for entry depending on the current status of the issue. Additionally, you can specify which fields should be enabled or disabled depending on the Status of the issue. You can also define which Statuses a defect can be changed to from its current Status. Finally, you can even control which users will have permission to set defects to each Status selection. Top of Page
Can I create custom filters or queries?Yes. View Filters can be created and applied based on almost all of the fields within the defect entry. Custom fields are also available as part of the filtering. View Filters can be created to filter based on relative dates as well (last 30 days, last 7 days, etc.). View Filters can be named and saved, and appear in a combo box on the main toolbar for quick selection and application. You can even define personal view filters as "private" so they will only appear for selection on your workstation, instead of being available to all users. Top of Page
Can I assign defects to different people at each stage of development?Yes. Bugs can be assigned to any resource defined in the database at any time. There are fields available for a general "Assigned To" resource as well as a specific "Technician" fields at the Origin, Workaround, Correction, and Testing phases as well. Top of Page
Can I "hide" old issues or releases from the display?Yes. Old issues can be hidden using view filters based on date. If you want to hide an entire product or release within a product, that can be done at the release level by checking a box, and that release will no longer appear within selection lists. This feature is very useful when you have several products, each with 10 or 20 releases of history, and you generally only work on the most current releases. Top of Page
How much does SWBTracker cost?Probably much less than you'd expect! SWBTracker is one of the most competitively-priced defect management products available today -- and still one of the most powerful. To view our current product pricing, please refer to the SWBTracker Pricing Page. Network licenses vary based on the number of users. Note that SWBTracker multi-user licenses are "floating" or "concurrent" licenses. This saves you money by allowing you to buy only the number of licenses you will actually need, instead of one license for every workstation that will ever require access to the software. Many bug-tracking products offer higher pricing for concurrent licensing, or offer only dedicated workstation licensing. Make sure you ask what type of multi-user licensing you will receive when comparing prices! Top of Page
How are user licenses counted?SWBTracker uses concurrent licensing. You only need to purchase a license for the number of people who will use the software at the same time, not the total number of users on your network. This can save you hundreds of dollars compared to products that force you to purchase a dedicated license for each physical workstation. Top of Page
Will the demo work with multiple users on my network?Yes. The trial download of SWBTracker will support up three concurrent users. If you are considering the purchase of a multi-user license, we highly recommend that you set up the SWBTracker demo on your network and use it with several users in order to see how it works for your organization in your network environment. If you need to test SWBTracker with a larger subset of data or with more concurrent users, contact us at sales@softwarewithbrains.com and request an "Unlimited Evaluation License" and specify the number of users you would like for your evaluation license. This special license removes all the limitations of the trial version and allows you to run the software in your environment with as many users as you would like, but for a limited period of time (normally 30 days). What type of upgrade policy exists?Software with Brains may post "interim" releases with minor version changes if critical problems are corrected or minor improvements are made. Minor version releases (for example, 7.1 to 7.2) are FREE of charge and can be downloaded from the Software with Brains web site as soon as they are posted. Major version releases (for example, 6.x to 7.x) can be purchased at a significant discount. Please refer to the Pricing page to view the pricing for major version upgrades and for adding users to an existing license. Top of Page
Can I upgrade the number of users after the initial purchase without a penalty?Yes. If you want to add users at a later date, you can do so by purchasing one of our "user upgrade" options. We currently offer the ability to upgrade from a single-user, 5-user, or 15-user license to 5, 15 and site licenses for the current difference in the price between the two licenses. So if you purchase a 15-user license today and decide after three months to upgrade to a site license, you will not pay any more in total for both purchases than you would if you had purchased the site license initially. Top of Page
I don't want to use my credit card online. Can I fax my order?Yes. When you place your order, you will have several options for payment type, including faxing your order information. Top of Page
What if I find SWBTracker doesn't suit my company's needs after I buy it?Under our refund policy, you can request a refund within 30 days of the original purchase. We strongly encourage you to try SWBTracker before you purchase a license. To facilitate this, Software with Brains offers an SWBTracker Evaluation Version which allows you to evaluate SWBTracker on a limited basis. This version lets you to "test drive" SWBTracker by allowing you to enter a limited number of releases, programs and defects. Otherwise, it contains all the features and benefits of the licensed version of SWBTracker. Top of Page
