SWBTracker Database Server
What is the SWBTracker Database Server? The SWBTracker Database Server is an optional add-on application that allows workstations running SWBTracker in a multiuser environment to communicate with the SWBTracker database utilizing a client/server model rather than a file sharing model. Is the database server required to run SWBTracker in a multiuser environment? No. SWBTracker can run in a multiuser LAN environment without the use of the database server. SWBTracker will share a centrally located set of database files utilizing the normal file-sharing protocols built into the Windows operating system. Why would I need the SWBTracker Database Server? The database server creates a client/server database model, rather than the standard file-sharing model in multiuser environments. In the client/server model, the database server application runs on the file server (where your SWBTracker database files are stored) and acts as a single "gateway" to the database. This gateway controls access to the data and processes many of the SWBTracker workstation database requests directly at the file server, which enhances the response time of SWBTracker in most cases. Additionally, because the database server is the only application that actually accesses the database directly, there is less chance of database corruption in a multiuser environment under heavy load. Also, if you need to have remote users access the SWBTracker database directly over the internet, then you need the database server to allow remote internet connections. How do I determine if I need the SWBTracker Database Server? Download and install the SWBTracker application on your workstations and file server and configure it for multi-user access if you have not already. By default, SWBTracker workstations access the database directly on the file server in a file-sharing model. In most multiuser environments, this default model acheives a desireable level of performance and the database server is not necessary. However, if your environment is such that you require many users to access the database simultaneously and for extended periods of time, you may find that installing and using the database server enhances the performance of SWBTracker in your environment. Also, if you need to have remote users accessing your SWBTracker database over their high-speed internet connection, then you'll need the database server to allow this type of connection. If you already own a license to SWBTracker, we can provide you with a client/server trial license that will allow you to evaluate the database server temporarily to determine if your environment would benefit from the server's functionality. What is required to make the SWBTracker database accessible over the internet? You'll need SWBTracker installed on your workstations (local or remote) and the database server installed on a server connected to the internet. Your remote users will require a high-speed internet connection in order to get the most benefit out of SWBTracker over the internet. If you do not wish to set up or maintain an internet file server for the SWBTracker database, we can suggest third-party companies who specialize in hosting our database engine's server. You simply sign up, upload your database, and start tracking! How do I install the SWBTracker Database Server? Server setup has been made as simple as possible, but it is important to follow some specific steps to ensure that SWBTracker is configured properly for client/server access.
